Description:

The purpose of the course is to acquaint students with selected areas of law and with the basics of the EU in English and introduce the basic pertinent terminology.
Within the course civil law, tort law, contract law and company law are defined and torts, contracts and types of companies in the UK are described.
Protection of human rights in the EU is analyzed, as well as the European Court of Human Rights.
Historical development of the European Union is described and sourced of EU law explained.
Institutions of the EU are discussed and their basic functions explained using relevant terminology in the English language.
Special attention is paid to the acquisition of terminology of the tax profession and the development of communication skills.

Cognitive Skills:

define law of torts and types of torts

define contract law, contract, structure of a contract, valid, void and voidable contracts

define company law and forms of business organisations

analyse the protection of human rights in the EU and the ECHR

name the principal institutions of the European Union and explain their fundamental functions;

use the relevant vocabulary in language exercises;

use appropriate language structures and collocations;

demonstrate the understanding of relevant terms in English by translating into Croatian

Practical and Generic Skills:

present the acquired learning outcomes in English;

use appropriate language structures and terms in discussing the relevant topics;

develop communication skills in English;

participate in team work in the preparation of presentations in English.

Matching Assessments to Learning Outcomes:

the learning outcomes are tested by written exercises, an oral examination and student presentations delivered in class
