Description
English for Tax Professionals I is first of four compulsory courses of English for special purposes in the professional study of public finances. This course focuses on getting the students acquainted with the basic legal terminology. Firstly, the topic of language for special purposes is discussed, with a particular emphasis on legal language, both in English and in other languages. Following that, various definitions of law are discussed, as well as various functions law may have. The next topic concerns the ways law can be divided into branches and areas. Focusing on relevant terminology, the differences and similarities between them are examined. Special attention is given to the differences between civil and criminal law, both in substantive and procedural terms. The next topic explored in the course is the organisation of government and separation of powers. All major government bodies in all three branches are discussed, in terms of both their composition and powers. Finally, an example of a legislative body is given in British Parliament. Each unit is accompanied by authentic texts which help broaden the knowledge on the presented topics, whether in class activities or as self-study material.
