Description
Students will gain relevant knowledge from the area of social influence, interpersonal relations, psychology of small groups and processes between groups that contribute to the theoretical foundation of professional judgments, interventions and evaluation in social work. Furthermore, their sensitivity for complex social influences on the experience and behaviour of social workers in professional assessment and decision-making, as well as in conducting interventions with individuals and groups, will be enhanced.
Course description
- Socialisation processes. Application of attachment theory in social work. Parenting.
- Social cognition and social perception. Perception and assessment of others (making impressions, attribution theory, implicit personality theories). Sources of errors in observation and evaluation of persons- examples from social work practice.
- Attitudes (structure and functions, attitude determinants, consistency theories, relation between attitudes and behaviour, persuasion). Impact of social workers- attitudes on professional activities
- Interpersonal relations: Aggressive behaviour (theoretical explanation; situation determinants; means of reduction). Pro-social behaviour and altruism (theoretical explanation, situation determinants; promotion). Social support. Interpersonal attraction and love.
- Processes within the group: Group forming and structure. Group cohesion and norms. Group and social identity. Social categorization. Group dynamics and roles. Impact of the group to the behaviour of individuals. Social pressure and conformism. Indulgence and obedience to authority. Diffusion of responsibility. Leadership and power. Decision-making in a group.
- Processes between groups: Stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination. Roots of stereotypes and prejudices and means of their changing. Social welfare clients as objects of social prejudices.
- Conflicts between groups in community and conflict resolution.
