Description
Students will acquire knowledge related to theoretical content of the course. Through seminars they will be able to deepen their knowledge, and through practical work they will learn specific skills for work with older persons - recognising specific needs, individual and group work, specific features of communication with the elderly and empowerment of the elderly.
Course description
Roots of gerontology, origin and development of gerontology as science; Concept, subject and methods in gerontology; Basic principles of social gerontology; Relation between gerontology and other scientific disciplines, in particularly to geriatrics; Theory of ageing; Individual ageing and population ageing; Socio-economic causes of population ageing; Physiological and pathological ageing; Social status of the elderly; Economic status, calamity and poverty of the elderly; Possibilities and the need of defining social status of elderly; Impact of social changes to status of the elderly in urban and rural areas; Functional and somatic changes in the old age; Psychological changes in the old age; Medical needs and medical pathology of the elderly; Health care of the elderly; Psychiatric disorders of the elderly; Sickness and mortality of aging population; Dependence of the elderly on supporters ? institutionalisation and placement; Widowhood and adaptation issue of ageing men and women; Working capability and physical activity in old age; Retirement and other stress factors of the elderly; Cultural-educational needs of the elderly; Social activities of the elderly; Intergeneration relations, isolation and loneliness.
