The aim of the first semester course is to make students familiar with specific features of the language for specific purposes in comparison with the language of general communication. Working on the themes during the first semester students gradually get acquainted with the features of the legal language as well. The six topics include: general introduction into law and legal norm, the question of legal education in Germany, constitutional grounds of the Republic of Croatia, state structure of the Federal Republic of Germany, basic human rights in the German legal system and the question of fundamental human rights from the perspective of international law, based on the example of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights.

Students get an overview of the main branches of law and are encouraged to compare the state systems in Croatia and Germany. Besides working on single legal terms, collocations and multi-word expressions, students practice syntactical structures that are frequent in German language of law (e. g. the use of passive structures). Students are expected to actively participate in class work and discussion about all linguistic and legal issues, relying on their knowledge from different courses, their prior linguistic and general knowledge.
