AFAR: ALGORITHMIC FAIRNESS FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS AND REFUGEES:
AFAR: Algorithmic Fairness for Asylum Seekers and Refugees

AFAR: Algorithmic Fairness for Asylum Seekers and Refugees is a four-year interdisciplinary research project that started in 2021. Our department is one of the project partners, together with the Hertie School in Berlin, University of Oxford, European University Institute in Florence, and University of Copenhagen.

The AFAR project is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation in the frame of its “Challenges for Europe” programme. It investigates the use of new technologies in migration and asylum governance. In particular, it explores the concept of ‘fairness’ in automated decision-making processes, as well as in complex machine learning and artificial intelligence systems, and in related uses of digital identity mechanisms.

Our department employs two Postdoctoral Researchers who contribute to the AFAR project.
