Description
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the language register used in the field of social sciences and to enable them to independently use professional literature in German. Within the course, students learn and apply professional terminology in speech and writing and master the specific features of grammar and syntax in German for social purposes. The course consists of four modules and is the second course in German for social purposes, following the one for first year students. The first module deals with demographic changes in society with special emphasis on demographic characteristics and processes and trends in population development, migration and immigrant countries. The second module is on social policy. It discusses the goals of welfare states and the means by which these goals are achieved, as well as the future of welfare states in Europe. A separate topic is the social policy of the European Union and its specific features. The third module deals with marginalized groups. The focus is on the unemployed, the people with special needs, the elderly and the poor and their specific needs, as well as the causes and consequences of these conditions. The last module is dedicated to legal topics. The basics of German social and juvenile criminal law and Swiss divorce law are discussed. In order to master the skills of reading and comprehension and getting to know the specific features of certain text types, students during the course read and analyze authentic texts in German such as legal texts, professional and newspaper articles, brochures, etc.
