Description:

The purpose of the course is to acquaint students with the basics of the tax system and taxation principles of the European Union and the basic pertinent terminology.
The following topics are analyzed in detail: Tax administration in the RC, Electronic Commerce Act, the Treaty of Lisbon, Economic and Monetary Union, the euro, taxation in the EU, the European Court of Auditors, OLAF, European Central Bank and double taxation in the EU.
Each unit is divided in two parts, whereby the first part provides an introduction to a topic, while other texts within the unit are extracts from the original texts so that the students can learn the terms typical for particular topics and get acquainted with different text styles (parts of laws, treaties, press releases etc.).
Special emphasis is placed on legal terminology and communication skills.

Cognitive Skills:

define the Tax Administration and explain its scope of activity

acquire general knowledge about the taxation in the EU

identify the member states of the European Monetary Union and explain the bases of its functioning;

describe the main principles of EU taxation policy;

recall the key tasks and powers of the European Court of Auditors and OLAF;

explain the role of the European Central Bank

define the notion of double taxation and discuss systems of resolving double taxation dispuites within the EU;

use the relevant vocabulary in language exercises;

use appropriate language structures and collocations;

demonstrate the understanding of relevant terms in English by translating into Croatian

Practical and Generic Skills:

present the acquired learning outcomes in English;

use appropriate language structures and terms in discussing the relevant topics;

develop communication skills in English;

participate in team work in the preparation of presentations in English.

Matching Assessments to Learning Outcomes:

the learning outcomes are tested by written exercises, an oral examination and student presentations delivered in class;
